Our Christmas Miracle

Our Christmas Surprise – A True Christmas Miracle

It looked to be a very humble Christmas for us that year, in earthly treasures. Of course the celebration of the main reason for the Christmas holiday would be most glorious! My husband was the assistant pastor of a church in New England, and we always had so many festivities planned to remind folks about why we celebrate Christmas. We had the Christmas cantata, and caroling to the nursing homes, a Christmas party for all, and a beautiful candlelight Christmas Eve communion service. Yes, it was tremendously splendid and something we always looked forward to so much.

However, early in November that year I had found myself sitting at the table praying about a Christmas present for my husband. I really wanted to get him a new suit. I had seen an article in a Christian publication that told of how a Christian businessman who owned a men's clothing store actually gave suits, ties, and shirts to missionaries and preachers so that they would always look their best. I had wanted my husband to have a new suit which he so badly needed, since his birthday in June. It was shortly after that when I saw the article about Mr.Tatum. I was impressed to write a letter to him and find out if he would sell me a suit and be willing to take the money in small installments, since I had absolutely no idea when I could pay him back.

As I sat there, I felt like I was begging and my pride would not let me write the letter, so I decided to forget about it. Every time I would go to pray or read my Bible after that, it was as though there was a wall between me and GOD. I knew I needed to try to compose that letter. One day, as I sat there, I realized that my husband was the most wonderful, compassionate, hardworking Christian Man that I knew. I began to write a letter about my husband, telling about his labor and sacrifice for the Lord's work. I ended the letter in this way..." I know these things to be true and oh so much more, for this man is my husband!"

That November ended on a sad note. A dear preacher that we looked up to and was my husband's earthly hero, Lester Roloff, had been killed in a plane crash. Although we knew that he was with the LORD, it would make a difference in many lives that he was gone.

One day in early December, a very large package came to our home from Mr. Jim Tatum. A letter enclosed stated how his heart had been touched by my love for my husband, and he had sent Steve a wardrobe of clothes that had originally been intended for his dear friend Lester Roloff, whom he had dressed for many years and loved so deeply! He said when he saw the size I had given him, he knew immediately that the LORD wanted Steve to have these things. (Of course, he didn't know how special that would be for my husband, until we later told him.) And enclosed with the letter was a very large check to buy presents for our children. He wanted us to have the best Christmas ever.

I was trembling by then and quickly called my cousin, a new Christian, and asked her to come and see what GOD had done! I know this was a great encouragement to her. We were dumbfounded as we pulled out item after item. Two suits, a sports jacket, three pairs of pants, shirts, ties, and even an all weather coat! Beautiful, high-quality clothes that would give him years of wear! But I knew the greatest thing to him would be that they were to have been Brother Roloff's clothes. And the fact that everyting was the exact size, was just too much.

I shared with our Pastor about the Christmas miracle, and he too was so touched by the kindness and generosity of Mr. Tatum. He knew the connection with Lester Roloff would be such a blessing to Steve. Steve actually carried a picture of Lester Roloff in his wallet! My husband loves children, and I think the fact that Brother Roloff loved kids so much and had the many ministries for them, touched his heart, as well as his great, uncompromising love for the LORD.

Well, I was able to do some Christmas shopping for the children, and kept busy with all the activities of the season, all the while so excited about the coming presentation of the gifts. I had held out a tie and a shirt and wrapped them. And then I wrapped the big box, and left it in the basement. I hid a tape recorder under the sofa, so we could catch the comments that were sure to come. Even the children did not know, since I was afraid they would ruin the surprise.

When we arrived home from the Candlelight service, it was time. I stated that I wanted Daddy to open his gifts first. So I took out the tie and handed it to him. He commented on it...then I gave him the shirt...he did make a comment about where did you get the money for this...

I asked my son to come with me and get one more thing. We carried the heavy wardrobe box up the stairs and into the living room, placing it in front of my husband. He said, "Now what is this?" I said just open it....by then the children were making comments such as..."Wow, folks she hit a goldmine! " As Steve began to see the contents of the box, he was overwhelmed, but also fearful that I had done something stupid to pay for this.

"Where did you get the money for this?" he said over and over, until I handed him the letter. Then as he began to read, the tears streamed down his face. He was totally overcome with emotion.

"I have to call Pastor", he said. I smiled to myself, knowing that Pastor was probably sitting by the phone waiting. As he made the call, I brought out all the children's gifts and when he got off the phone, we sat and rejoiced at the goodness of GOD to us.

This happened many years ago, but I never tire of telling it! GOD is good!

Waiting

This is an article from an email newsletter created especially for my children a decade ago. I have been wanting to republish these so from time to time I willl share one.

Mom's Musings.....Thinking on Things

"And therefore, will the LORD wait, that He may be gracious unto you, and therefore will He be exalted, that He may have mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait upon Him." Isaiah 30:18

It seems that there is always some area in our life that we are learning to wait on the LORD. He uses this as a discipline in our lives continually. Although it is trying for us, He is a good God and withholding the answer is part of the best plan he has for us.

His ideal for us is that we would learn from each waiting experience that His way is best, and that as we are waiting, we can look forward to the conclusion with absolute confidence that His way is perfect. During the waiting times, He offers grace and peace for the asking.

As a woman, I have personally experienced what is one of the hardest experiences in life...awaiting the birth of a child. How Satan would torment me with fearful thoughts and anxiety during those months!

At that time I did not know the promises of God, so just cowered at these attacks and hoped and yes prayed that everything would turn out right! The aspect that probably bothered me most during those times was my total lack of control.

As Christians, we can face life's earthly uncertainties knowing that GOD is always at work....that He is in absolute control, and that He is withholding the conclusion to present it in His perfect timing. His way is best...He does this to prove His compassion, grace and mercy in our lives, to glorify Himself, and for other reasons to be revealed in eternity. However we can be sure that all is done with His Perfect love toward us.

No Greater Joy !!!

Thinking on Things January 2011

Do you make lists? I tend to do that, especially as I get older. It does help me to not forget what needs to be accomplished, or attained. Somehow I am impressed to go toward a simple list for this New Year. I believe this list will guide me in the days ahead to remain focused on what is important. To assess things of true (value) it is necessary to judge by THE TRUTH, God's Holy Word to me.

1.Recognize my purpose: To love God, to be devoted to Him. He wanted someone to love and be loved by Him. He loves me because I am His child. What I do is noted by Him, but that is not why He loves me. He has goals for me, but that is not why He created me. If I love God the way He desires to be loved I will be fulfilling the desire of His heart! It will lead to the acts of love and obedience that my being is equipped by God for.

Revelation 4:11 "Thou art worthy O Lord, to receive Glory (praise and adoration), and Honour (respectful obedience) and power (my strength and ability): for Thou hast created all things and for Thy pleasure they are and were created."

2.Recognize the plan: To love the Lord with all my heart, soul, and mind. It is an intentional, fervent love, that will involve my emotions, my physical body, and the submission of my will (willing to, wanting to) do the things of His good pleasure. This is a constant, trusting love that He actually develops in me as our relationship grows. This is a wonderful, mysterious love unlike any earthly relationship, since it is built on trusting my all-perfect and truthful God Who will never break a promise to His child!

Luke 10:27 "Thou shalt love the LORD thy GOD with all thy heat, with all thy with all thy soul,; and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself."

3.Recognize the priorities: Next, to impart His love to others. Only by developing my relationship with Him, will I then love and help others the way He wants them to be loved. Unconditionally. In this sharing of my beloved, I cannot hold myself back. My motive will be love. Jesus personified this example for us.

John 17:26 "And I have declared unto them Thy name, and will declare it, that the love wherewith Thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them."

4.Recognize His presence and power: God Himself is ever-present with me as the Holy Spirit. He is within and without. He guides, leads, and empowers me. How I thrill as I write this because God alone knows the path ahead this year. It may be a dark path that He will enlighten, or a steep path that is hard and rocky. It may be that He will need to carry me. His loving care for me will never fail.

Ephesians 4:30 " And grieve not the Spirit of God whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption." "What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which ye have of God and ye are not your own,? Ye are bought with a price...therefore glorify God in your body and in your Spirit, which are God's." "...for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God and they shall be my people.
" I Corinthians 6:19,20,2 Corinthians 6:16 "Greater is He that isin you than he that is in the world."I John 4:4

Enjoy a Thankful Thanksgiving

Have a thankful Thanksgiving!

That is what I have decided must be the correct holiday greeting.Tomorrow will be the 2010 Thanksgiving holiday.Whatever the day may bring, it will probably bring comparisons to other years, other Thanksgiving dinners. Whether it seems better or worse, it will be original. Practically almost
the same or possibly very different.

What will your Thanksgiving day be? Will it be in the same location as always with the same people as always? Maybe new acquaintances will be at the table. Perhaps others may be gone, either just this time, or from now on.

Will you be thankful for the changes as well as the expected? Major changes may be at the least unsettling, possibly devastating were it not for the unchanging Christ Who is always with us. He will ease us into a new situation with His comforting and encouraging presence.

You can have a Thankful Thanksgiving because you are not alone
and can be grateful for the constancy of His
love.

"Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today, and forever."Heb.13:8

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.” Colossians 3:18

The Ultimate True Experience

I could say, "This was the hottest summer ever!" This would definitely not be the truth. Statistics and records could factually prove that to be an incorrect statement. However, just by adding two little words to this statement I can qualify it to be the truth as I know it. "This was the hottest summer ever for me."

Mountaintop or Valley

Mountaintop or Valley?

Isn't it interesting that we usually remember circumstances only if they fit in one of two categories: really good or really bad. Think about it and I believe you will agree. In fact it is quite difficult to remember the details of an ordinary day, since many times they just don't really register.

Do you ever say "Well, I guess nothing important happened that day because I don't remember anything outstanding." Or, "it couldn't have been that important if I can't even remember it!"

There are many benefits and disadvantages about the high days (mountaintops) and the low days (vallies). There is an awful lot to meditate on here. But I want to focus on one thing. If we wake up at all in the morning that is the main thing. Either God's not ready for us or we aren't ready for Him.

No matter what type of day's circumstances occur, every day of life is an extraordinary gift from God and by following His leadership it becomes the best day it can be. What more could we ask for?

"This is the day which the LORD has made! We will rejoice and be glad in it!"
"Rejoice in the LORD alway, and again I say Rejoice!" Philippians 4:4
